what are you afraid of?

Maybe your struggle is not being too busy or saying yes to everything, maybe your struggle is fear. Is it fear of being alone? Fear of  not fitting in? Financial insecurity? Fear of the dark? Fear of losing someone? Fear of losing face? The list could go on and on. The bottom line is fear robs you of peace.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7

One of my biggest fears is heights. I cannot get over my fear of heights and the older I get, the worse my fear gets. If I am in a really tall building, I imagine the whole thing collapsing. If I am on the edge of the Grand Canyon I remember that there is a whole book of people who have died in freak accidents at the Grand Canyon. When I’m on a roller coaster and we’re making the ascent to the tallest hill and there are steps on the side, I imagine how I’m going to get down. Typically, I can’t talk myself into getting out of my harness and walking down the steps. I feel I would probably stay put until they were able to get the roller coaster back up and running. This fear of heights is a problem! This is a small example of how fear starts to take over. I won’t really ride roller coasters anymore, I tend to steer clear of the Grand Canyon, I like to stick to buildings that are less than 10 stories. I think you get the idea.

Fears can be big or small but simply put, when you have fear you are not trusting your Creator to take care of you. We complicate situations and try to handle everything ourselves, instead of trusting that God has the situation under control.

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Philippians 4:6

I’m a bit of a control freak. When things aren’t the way I think they should be, I have a hard time accepting it. But anxiety doesn’t change the outcome. Anxiety only changes how I am reacting to the situation. Here’s a thought that gets me through the times where I feel my anxiety taking over: God cared enough about the birds to give them worms and insects to eat. How much more does he care for you and me to make sure that we are provided for? Talk about reassurance. Talk about someone having your back. It’s so simple when you think about it. There is a reason and purpose for all of God’s creation. His ways are higher than ours, we simply have to trust Him.

Those who put their trust in God have a peace about them. They’re able to sleep peacefully at night, they don’t need drugs or alcohol to escape the constant nagging of their mind. If you want that type of peace, it is there for you. All you have to do is ask for it. No purchase necessary.

Don’t let fear steal your peace. Give your fears over, He will take care of you. Peace will come when you trust in Him. Worrying and fretting seems to get me nothing but more gray hair. And I could do without that.
