Peace and contentment go hand in hand, like peanut butter and jelly. The definition of contentment is in a state of peaceful happiness. God tells us to be content. Whether we have much or little, be content. In other words, whether we have much or little, live in a state of peaceful happiness. Jealousy, bitterness and greed are the enemies of contentment. Don’t live in a state of jealousy that you have less or constantly fight with your spouse because you want more. I find myself getting bitter with others because they’re path seems a lot easier than mine and things seem to be handed to them for one reason or another. But being bitter will only make my life worse. That other person still has what I want whether I’m bitter or not. I wonder if God is offended by our ungratefulness sometimes. Sometimes, even I am offended by my own ungratefulness, so I’m sure He feels the same way.

Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, ” I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?” Hebrews 13:5-6

We often judge our value and the value of others by how much money they have (or appear to have, these are two very different things in a lot of instances). I wrote a post a few months back on the pursuit of stuffI am not sure if we stockpile stuff because we like it or if we do it because we’re terrified there will be a day that our accumulation of stuff will stop and we will only be left with what we have accumulated up to that point.

Then he [Jesus] said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.” Luke 12:15

It is our human nature to be greedy. Even toddlers are greedy with their food and their toys. It’s our instinct for survival to get more and more, to store it up for when the dry seasons come. That is why Jesus tells us that we have to die to ourselves daily. We have to turn away from our human nature and instinct and trust that God will take care of us.

Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. Take delight in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalms 37:3-4
